How to stop over-explaining

I recently bought not one but two vacuums at Costco.

As I left the warehouse with my new purchases, the woman checking receipts stopped me with an extremely worried expression on her face.

She said to me, “I really have to stop and ask myself why someone would need two vacuums?”

And just like that… I felt the impulse to explain myself.

With her comment/question, I went from being an adult woman at a Costco to a wayward teenager in the late 80s explaining to her Gran why she used her hard earned babysitting money to buy yet another Wet Seal item (no shade to my Gran, but it was a whole thing).

I said with warmth but with directness my new favorite phrase:
